What is the Guzhangian?

The Guzhangian is an important time in Earth's long history. It is part of the Cambrian era, when many new animals first appeared in the oceans. This special time came after the Drumian Stage and before the Paibian Stage.

Where Does the Name Come From?

The name Guzhangian comes from Guzhang County in Hunan Province, China. Scientists found important fossils there that help us learn about this time long ago.

What Lived Then?

During the Guzhangian, many interesting sea creatures lived. One of these was a trilobite called Lejopyge laevigata. Trilobites were small animals with hard shells. They help scientists know when the Guzhangian began. Another trilobite, Glyptagnostus reticulatus, helped scientists know when this time period ended.

Fun Earth Fact

Long ago, during the Guzhangian, the Earth was a little closer to the Moon. A full day back then was shorter than today—only about 21.5 hours!
