What is the Drumian?
The Drumian is an important time in Earth's long history. It is part of the Cambrian period, a time when many new kinds of life appeared in the oceans. The Drumian comes after the Wuliuan stage and before the Guzhangian stage.
Fun Facts About the Drumian
Scientists learn about the Drumian by looking for special ancient sea creatures called trilobites. They look for a trilobite named Ptychagnostus atavus, which lived about 504.5 million years ago to know when the Drumian began. The end of the Drumian is marked by another trilobite, Lejopyge laevigata, from around 500.5 million years ago.
Where Do We Learn About the Drumian?
The main place scientists study the Drumian is in the Drum Mountains in Utah, United States. Here, layers of rock called the Wheeler Formation hold clues about this ancient time.
Ancient Sea Life
The Drumian is famous for its many fossils. These fossils show us sponges, strange worm-like creatures called palaeoscolecids, and big, unusual animals named radiodonts. These fossils help us understand how ocean life looked millions of years ago.
