The Olympic Games
The Olympic Games are the world’s biggest sports events! Athletes from all over the globe come together to compete in summer and winter sports. These games happen every four years, and each time a different city hosts them.
The Olympics started long ago in Olympia, Greece. Back then, people held sports contests to honor the god Zeus. Today, the games are led by the International Olympic Committee, or IOC, which makes sure everything runs smoothly.
Hosting the Olympics is a big honor for a city. It brings visitors from around the world and can help improve the host’s facilities and attract tourism. Athletes get to meet people from many cultures and make friends from different countries.
Fun Facts
- The Olympic flag shows five linked rings, representing the unity of the world’s continents: Africa, the Americas, Asia, Europe, and Oceania.
- Before each Olympics, a flame is lit in Greece and carried to the host city by runners. This tradition reminds us of the ancient games.
- Every Olympics has special mascots—characters that represent the host country’s culture and landmarks.
