Baptists
Adapted from Wikipedia · Adventurer experience
Baptists are a group within Christianity. They believe in baptizing people who choose to believe, using full immersion. They believe in ideas such as soul competency, faith alone, and the Bible as the most important guide. Baptist churches have two main ceremonies: Baptism and the Lord's Supper.
Baptists have many different beliefs and ways of doing things, but they all share a similar history. They started as a group that did not agree with the Church of England in Great Britain. Leaders like John Smyth and Thomas Helwys helped create the first Baptist churches. They believed churches should be separate from the government to allow people to think freely.
Baptists have grown into a worldwide family, with churches on every continent. The Baptist World Alliance is the biggest group of Baptist churches. There are different kinds of Baptists, such as the General Baptists and the Particular Baptists, who have different ideas about Christ's teaching, but all Baptists believe in the value of personal belief and studying the Bible.
Origins
Baptist churches started in the 17th century in England. They grew from groups who wanted to follow the Bible more closely. These groups, called Dissenters, did not agree with the Church of England and wanted their own churches.
Baptists believe in two main practices: baptism by full immersion for believers only, and the Lord's Supper. They also believe each person is responsible for their own relationship with God, and that the Bible is the most important guide for faith. Their churches are usually organized so that members make decisions together.

Baptist churches can choose to work alone or join bigger groups. These bigger groups help with things like helping others, running schools, and supporting learning about their beliefs.
Most Baptist churches are part of national groups and the Baptist World Alliance. This worldwide group started in 1905. It helps people, shares their beliefs, and supports rights and freedom for all.
Missionary organizations
Missionary organizations helped Baptists grow around the world. The BMS World Mission began in 1792 in Kettering, England. In the United States, groups like International Ministries started in 1814, and the International Mission Board was created in 1845 to share their beliefs globally.
Membership
Baptist churches have different rules for membership because each church is independent. Usually, someone joins through a believer's baptism. This means they show their faith in Jesus by being fully immersed in water. Baptists believe baptism shows a person's repentance and faith but is not needed for salvation. There is no set age to join, but someone must be able to freely and sincerely express their faith.
In recent years, the number of Baptists has grown. Many millions of Christians around the world identify as Baptist.

Beliefs
Main articles: Baptist beliefs and List of Baptist confessions of faith
Baptists are Christians who share some beliefs but also have differences. They believe in one God, the virgin birth of Jesus, and that Jesus died and rose again to save people. They also believe in the Trinity—that God is three persons in one—and that Jesus will return to Earth someday.
Baptists have special practices. They believe baptism should be for people who choose to follow Jesus, and it should be done by fully immersing them in water. They also believe each church should make its own decisions and not be controlled by a larger group or government. This independence of each church is important to Baptists.
Types of Baptists

Baptists are a group of Christians who have different beliefs and practices. Some Baptists, called General Baptists, believe that Jesus died for everyone. They began in England and Wales and wanted to make changes to the Church of England.
Other Baptists, called Reformed Baptists or Particular Baptists, follow ideas from a theologian named Calvin. They believe that God has special plans for certain people. Both groups have different ideas about how people should join their churches and what they should believe. There are also groups like Missionary Baptists, Independent Baptists, Seventh Day Baptists, and Landmark Baptists, each with their own special beliefs and traditions.
Worship
In Baptist churches, worship services include praise, prayers to God, and a sermon based on the Bible. They also have an offering and sometimes the Lord's Supper. Some churches use traditional Christian music, while others use contemporary Christian music, or offer both types in different services. Many churches have special services for children and teenagers. They also hold prayer meetings during the week.
The architecture of Baptist churches is usually simple. The Latin cross is a common symbol that can often be seen on the building, showing it is a place of worship.
Education
Baptist churches have a long history of setting up schools, from elementary schools to universities. Some well-known examples include the Myanmar Institute of Theology, which is part of the Myanmar Baptist Convention, and Crandall University in Moncton, which is affiliated with the Canadian Baptists of Atlantic Canada.
These schools keep growing. The International Association of Baptist Colleges and Universities was started in the United States in 2006. By 2023, this group had 46 member universities and served about 75,000 students.
Controversies
Baptists have had many debates and disagreements throughout their history. These controversies sometimes led to new groups forming, but they also helped shape Baptist beliefs and practices.
One major controversy happened in the early 1800s over missions. Some Baptists wanted to send missionaries to share their faith around the world, while others did not. This led to a split, and some formed new groups, like the one led by Alexander Campbell.
Another big issue was slavery, especially in the United States. Before and during the Civil War, some Baptists in the South owned slaves or supported slavery, while Baptists in the North often opposed it. This disagreement led to the formation of the Southern Baptist Convention in 1845. Later, after the Civil War, African American Baptists formed their own organizations, like the National Baptist Convention, to support their communities and worship freely. In 1995, the Southern Baptist Convention apologized for its past support of slavery and racism.
