Chase Center

Chase Center is a large indoor arena in the Mission Bay neighborhood of San Francisco, California. It is where the Golden State Warriors, a famous basketball team in the National Basketball Association (NBA), play their home games. The arena is also home to the Golden State Valkyries from the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA). Sometimes, it hosts games for the University of San Francisco men's and women's basketball teams and one game each season for the Santa Cruz Warriors, who usually play in the NBA G League.

The Golden State Warriors moved to Chase Center in 2019 after playing in Oakland for many years. During Valkyries games, the arena is called "Ballhalla," inspired by a place from Norse mythology. Chase Center is one of the newest arenas in the NBA and has special practice facilities for the Warriors team.

Location and design

The arena is home to the Golden State Warriors and the Golden State Valkyries. It is in San Francisco at Third St. and 16th St. The arena has many layers and floors with space for 18,064 people to sit. It also has a special area for theater shows and an entrance that looks out onto a new park.

Development

In May 2012, the Golden State Warriors shared their plan for a new arena. Important people, like the mayor of San Francisco and the team's owners, attended the meeting. They wanted to build the arena by the water, but some people thought it would cause too much traffic.

In April 2014, the team bought land in the Mission Bay neighborhood for the arena. Building started in January 2017 after more discussions about traffic and parking. In January 2016, the arena was named Chase Center after JPMorgan Chase bought the naming rights.

The Golden State Warriors had a special ceremony to start building Chase Center on January 17, 2017.

Opening

The Chase Center opened on September 6, 2019. It had a concert by Metallica and the San Francisco Symphony. The Golden State Warriors played their first preseason game there on October 5, 2019 against the Los Angeles Lakers. Their first regular season game at Chase Center was on October 24, 2019 against the Los Angeles Clippers.

Controversies

Construction and location

Many people in Oakland were unhappy when the Golden State Warriors decided to build a new arena in San Francisco instead of staying in Oakland. They worried this would change their city too much. Some people were also concerned about how much public money was used for the new arena.

Impact of the COVID-19 pandemic

When the COVID-19 pandemic began in March 2020, San Francisco told large venues like Chase Center to stop letting crowds gather. This meant the Warriors had to play their home games with no fans. Soon after, the NBA paused the rest of the season.

Phish concert fall incidents

During a Phish concert in October 2021, a person fell from an upper level of Chase Center and was hurt. Two other fans were also hurt but were okay. Inspectors checked the arena and said it followed the city's safety rules.

Notable events

The Chase Center has hosted many exciting events. In 2025, it was the place for the NBA All-Star Game on February 16. Each year, the University of San Francisco men's and women's basketball teams play a game there. It will also host important NCAA basketball games in 2025 and 2028.

The arena has welcomed famous wrestling shows like WWE Raw and WWE SmackDown, as well as big boxing matches. It has also hosted major esports events, including the 2022 League of Legends World Championship final and the 2026 Pokémon World Championships. In 2025, it was the location for the Laver Cup tennis event.
