The economy of the Washington metropolitan area is very important. It includes Washington, D.C., and areas around it in Maryland, Northern Virginia, and Jefferson County, West Virginia.
Washington, D.C. makes up about a quarter of the area's economy, but northern Virginia has the largest share at over 45%. The area's economy has many different types of jobs and businesses. Important industries include the US federal government, tourism, information technology, research, hospitality, news media, and bioscience.
Key business areas include Downtown, Washington, D.C., Tysons, Virginia, Rosslyn, Virginia, Crystal City, Virginia, Bethesda, Maryland, and Silver Spring, Maryland. These places are busy centers of commerce and employment. Some of the biggest employers in the region include universities, hospitals, and large companies.

As of 2025, the Washington area has 21 big companies on the Fortune 500 list. These companies work in many different jobs and fields. The area also has offices for big companies from other countries, like Volkswagen, Rolls-Royce, Airbus, Nestlé, Ethiopian Airlines, and Lidl. There are also many other big companies here that aren’t on the Fortune 500 list because they are private, part of bigger companies, or credit unions. Some of these include Mars Inc., which makes snacks like M&M's, Snickers, and Skittles, as well as Bechtel, Geico, PenFed Credit Union, Northwest Federal Credit Union, and Navy Federal Credit Union.
Federal government

The federal government is very important to the economy of Washington, D.C. It employs many people in the area. In July 2022, 25% of workers in Washington, D.C. had jobs with the federal government. Key federal agencies are also in the suburbs. The Pentagon, home to the US Department of Defense, is in Arlington County, Virginia. The CIA is in the Langley area of Fairfax County, Virginia.
Many people in the region work for groups that depend on federal money or contracts. There are also lobbying organizations that try to change government policies. The area has many law firms that work with the government. Historically, K Street was famous for its lobbying groups. Some well-known firms are Brownstein Hyatt Farber Schreck, Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld, and Holland & Knight.
Other groups, like defense contractors, civilian contractors, nonprofits, trade unions, industry trade groups, and professional associations, also have offices in Washington to be near the government.
As of February 2022, some of the biggest U.S. government agencies in the Washington area included the United States Department of Defense at the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia, the United States Postal Service, the United States Department of Veterans Affairs, the United States Department of Homeland Security, and the United States Department of Justice.
Defense, aviation, and aerospace
The U.S. government’s need for military technology has helped create a big defense industry in the Washington area. Many important defense companies have their main offices here. The five largest weapons manufacturers in the world all have their headquarters in this region: Lockheed Martin in Bethesda, Maryland; RTX Corporation in Rosslyn, Virginia; Northrop Grumman in West Falls Church, Virginia; Boeing, which makes both commercial aircraft and military technology, in Crystal City; and General Dynamics in Reston, Virginia.
Other key aviation and space organizations are also based in the Washington region. This includes NASA, the U.S. government’s space research group, which is headquartered in Washington, D.C. NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland is one of the largest research centers in the country. Airbus, which works on both commercial planes and military technology, has its North American office in Fairfax County, Virginia. Blue Origin has major offices in Reston, Virginia, and SpaceX has an office in D.C. Ethiopian Airlines has its U.S. headquarters in Alexandria, Virginia.
Diplomacy and global finance
Diplomacy
Washington is home to 185 foreign embassies. Diplomats and ambassadors work there. Important meetings and cultural events often happen at these embassies. This makes DC a very culturally diverse city. Many international festivals and events are held here, often working with foreign embassies. The Organization of American States (OAS) is located at the corner of 17th street and Constitution Avenue. It helps countries in the Americas work together.
Global finance
Washington plays a big role in global finance. The Federal Reserve, the United States' central bank, is located along Constitution Avenue. It helps decide important financial matters that affect the value of money around the world.
The World Bank and International Monetary Fund are also based in Washington. These organizations help countries grow and stay stable by giving loans and support. Because of its importance in global finance, Washington was ranked as the 8th most competitive financial center in the world in 2023 by the Global Financial Centres Index.
International development
Important groups that help countries develop, like the Inter-American Development Bank and USAID, are based in Washington. Because of all these groups and experts, the Washington area is a key place for international development work, and home to many firms like Chemonics International.
Research and professional services
Washington is a great place for research and important work. It has many museums and research groups, like the Smithsonian Institution. They study art, nature, animals, and space.
The area also has many groups that think about big ideas and help make decisions. These include the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, Center for Strategic and International Studies, and Brookings Institution.
There are important medical research centers, such as the National Institutes of Health. They study health and medicine. Many companies that work on new medicines and health technology are nearby.
The city has many professional companies that help with advice and support. This includes big law firms and consulting groups like FTI Consulting and Hogan Lovells. The large consulting firms Deloitte, EY, PwC, and KPMG also have offices here.
Humanitarianism
DC is a global center for human rights and humanitarian non-profit organizations. There are over 500 groups in the Greater Washington area that help people in the U.S. and around the world. They work by studying important issues, giving aid to those in need, and speaking up for change.
Some of these groups include the UN Foundation, Human Rights Campaign, the World Wildlife Fund, the National Democratic Institute, Bread for the World, World Central Kitchen, Refugees International, US Committee for Refugees and Immigrants in Arlington, Virginia, and the National Endowment for Democracy. The American Red Cross is based in the city, along with offices for Save the Children and Search for Common Ground. The U.S. headquarters for the Salvation Army is in Alexandria, Virginia.

Technology and finance
The Washington region is very important for technology and finance in the United States. The area has strong roots in information technology, going back to the early days of the internet. Many big tech companies have offices and headquarters there, especially in Northern Virginia. This includes places like Google, Amazon, and IBM.
The area is also strong in biotechnology and life sciences, with many companies focused on medicine and health research. It is also a key center for financial services, with banks, insurance companies, and investment firms based in the region.
Hospitality
The Washington, D.C. area is an important place for the hotel and hospitality industry. Many large hotel companies have their main offices here.
For example, Marriott International, the world's biggest hotel chain, began as a small root beer stand in Washington, D.C. in 1927 and is now based in Bethesda, Maryland. Other big hotel companies with main offices in the area include Host Hotels & Resorts, Inc., Choice Hotels, and Hilton Worldwide.
The area has many hotels, which helps the local economy. Some well-known historic hotels in the city are the Georgetown Inn, Hamilton Hotel, Omni Shoreham Hotel, Riggs Hotel, Mayflower Hotel, and the Willard Hotel.
Consumer goods
Many companies that make things we use every day have their main offices in the Washington area. For example, Mars Inc. makes treats like M&M's, Snickers, and Twix, as well as food for pets. You can find Mars in Tysons, Virginia.
Another big company, Nestlé, which makes many foods and drinks, has its US office in Rosslyn, Virginia at 1812 North Moore Street. There is also Lidl, a grocery store chain from Germany, with its US office in Crystal City, Virginia.
The area is also home to many popular fast-food restaurants. CAVA started in Rockville, Maryland and is based in Washington, D.C. Five Guys began in Arlington, Virginia and is now in Alexandria, Virginia. Sweetgreen also started in Washington, D.C.
Big car companies have offices here too. Volkswagen has its North American office in Reston, Virginia, and the luxury car brand Rolls-Royce North America is also based in Reston.
Other important companies include Bechtel, one of the biggest engineering and building companies in the country, also located in Reston. CoStar Group, which helps people find commercial property, is in Rosslyn, Virginia and owns websites like Homes.com and Apartments.com.
Tourism
Tourism is a big and important part of the Washington, D.C. area's economy. In 2019, the area welcomed 24.6 million visitors, including 1.8 million from other countries. These visitors spent $8.15 billion while they were there.
The Washington region has many interesting places for tourists to see, such as monuments, memorials, museums, sports events, and national parks. The National Mall is the heart of the tourism industry, with many museums and monuments. Nearby, the Tidal Basin features more memorials and monuments, including the well-known Jefferson Memorial.
One of the most visited spots is Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington County, Virginia. This special place honors people who served in the military. It includes the tomb of President John F. Kennedy, marked by an eternal flame, and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, which has a guard watching over it all the time. Other popular sites include the Washington National Cathedral, The Pentagon, Old Town Alexandria, National Harbor, and Mount Vernon, the former home of George Washington.
Media

Washington, D.C., is an important city for news and media. The Washington Post, which started in 1877, is one of the most popular newspapers in the country and is found in Downtown Washington.
The Washington Times is another newspaper that reports on politics in Washington from a different angle. Other famous media sources in the area include The Atlantic, which discusses politics and culture, along with several magazines and websites that cover government news and international subjects. Many television and radio stations also have their main offices in and around Washington, D.C.
