Geography
Landsberg am Lech has three main parts. The old town is between the river Lech and a higher bank to the east. To the west of the river are areas like Katharinenvorstadt and Weststadt, which grew over time. On the higher east bank is an area called Bayervorstadt, which started growing in the early 1800s.

Landsberg Concentration Camp and displaced person camp
The Landsberg camp began in June 1944. It was a place where many people were held unfairly by the Nazis. By October 1944, over 5,000 people were still there. In April 1945, as the war was ending, many who could still walk were forced to leave by the Germans.
On 27 April 1945, soldiers from the United States Army freed the camp. After this, it became a place for people who had to leave their homes, mostly Jewish people from the Soviet Union and the Baltic states. This part of the camp closed on 15 October 1950.
Since 1983, people have been working to remember this difficult time in history. They created a memorial on the site of one of the old camps.
