History

Mullingar is the county town of County Westmeath in Ireland. It is the third biggest town in the Midland Region. The town has a long history. It became the main town for County Westmeath when the county was created.

The town was once called Maelblatha. Its name comes from an old story about a mill.

Geography

Mullingar is close to several lakes, such as Lough Owel, Lough Ennell, and Lough Derravaragh. The town is linked to Lough Ennell by Lacy's Canal and the River Brosna. The Royal Canal is also nearby.

History

Mullingar grew where people could cross the River Brosna safely. Old signs of people living there long ago include a special type of old castle called a motte-and-bailey castle, a tower house named Mullingar Castle, and several old water mills. The Irish name for Mullingar, An Muileann gCearr, means "left-handed mill" and reminds us of one of these mills.

Long ago, important religious groups began living in Mullingar. Two big monasteries were built there—one by the Bishop of Meath in 1227 and another by a family named Nugent in 1237. These monasteries were closed down in the 1500s and fell apart by the late 1600s.

In the 1540s, when County Westmeath was created, Mullingar became the main town for the county. Later, in the early 1800s, a big building called Wellington Barracks was finished. The current main church, called the Cathedral of Christ the King, was built in the 1930s where an older church once stood.

Local government and politics

Westmeath County Council is the local government for Westmeath. The council has two areas, and Mullingar town is in the Mullingar Municipal District with thirteen members.

The town is part of the Longford–Westmeath area for elections to Dáil Éireann. Mullingar has a Chamber of Commerce, and it is one of three towns in the Midlands Gateway region, along with Athlone and Tullamore.

Tourism

Mullingar has many places to visit. You can find lakes such as Lough Owel, Lough Derravaragh, and Lough Ennell. These lakes are great for fishing. The Royal Canal runs through the town. Nearby, there is Belvedere House and Gardens, Mullingar Golf Club, and the Bloomfield House Hotel.

The town has several hotels, like the Newbury Hotel, Annebrook House Hotel, Mullingar Park Hotel, and the Greville Arms Hotel. A special building is the cathedral of Christ the King Mullingar, which is part of the Diocese of Meath.

There are also monuments and statues in Mullingar. There is one remembering the 1916 Easter Rising, a memorial for the Great Famine, and a statue of Joe Dolan. Mullingar Town Park is a nice public park. It has playgrounds, a swimming pool, and a big pond.

Economy

Mullingar is known for making items like pewterware from a company called Mullingar Pewter. Another local business, Genesis Fine Art, makes special gifts. A famous sculpture called "Pilgrims" can be found on Austin Friars Street.

The shopping area of Mullingar has grown a lot. It started with just a few shops on Oliver Plunkett Street, Austin Friars Street, and Mount Street. Now there are big shopping spots like the Harbour Place Shopping Centre near the town centre and a retail park at Lakepoint. You can find many different shops, banks, and a credit union called Mullingar Credit Union.

Mullingar also has places where businesses operate, like industrial estates and business parks. Some companies that employ people in Mullingar include the Midland Regional Hospital, P.E.M. Engineering, Trend Technologies, Taconic International, and Mullingar Pewter. The town also has a large warehouse for Lidl.

Mullingar has a Chamber of Commerce that helps about 200 businesses in the area.

Transport

Road

Mullingar is close to the main road between Dublin and Sligo, called the N4. It is also near the N52 road, which connects to Galway, Dublin, Athlone, Kells, Ardee, and Dundalk.

Bus

Bus services run from Mullingar to Dublin, Athlone, Sligo, Cavan, Tullamore, and Ballina. In February 2026, new local bus routes called MU1 and MU2 started in Mullingar.

Waterway

In the 1800s, Mullingar had a canal called the Royal Canal, but it is no longer used for travel. The town is connected to Lough Ennell by Lacy's Canal and the River Brosna.

Railways

The train line from Dublin to Mullingar opened between 1846 and 1848. The current train station in Mullingar began service in 1855. Today, trains still run from Mullingar to Dublin, Sligo, and Longford. The old train track between Mullingar and Athlone is now a walking and biking path called the Old Rail Trail.

Healthcare

The Midland Regional Hospital at Mullingar cares for the Longford-Westmeath area. A new part was built in the early 1990s, but work stopped for many years. It was finished in late 2006 when funding was found. Mullingar also has other health centres, like St Loman's, which helps people with mental health, St Mary’s for older people, and St Francis Private Hospital.

Education

Mullingar has many primary schools. Some follow the Catholic tradition, one follows the Church of Ireland tradition, and one is non-denominational run by Educate Together. There are also two schools where lessons are in the Irish language.

For older students, there are several secondary schools such as Coláiste Mhuire, St Finian's College, Loreto College Mullingar, and Mullingar Community College. Some schools used to only accept boys or girls, but many now welcome all students. The Community College also offers classes for adults and gives out FETAC certificates.

There are also special schools like Wilson's Hospital School in the nearby village of Multyfarnham, and St. Joseph's Secondary School in Rochfortbridge, which serves students from the Mullingar area.

Mullingar has a long history with music. The Mullingar Town Band started in 1879 and has played many concerts and marches, even winning a big competition in 2017. The Stables venue opened in 1989 and is a favorite place for live music. Famous musicians from Mullingar include Niall Horan from the boy band One Direction and Niall Breslin from The Blizzards. Other local bands include The Academic. The town has hosted the Fleadh Cheoil several times.

Mullingar is mentioned in songs like "The Reason I Left Mullingar" and "The Rocky Road to Dublin." Writer James Joyce wrote about the town in his books. The town was on a BBC 2 show in 2009 and in the film Doubt. A play called Outside Mullingar stars actor Debra Messing.

Sport

Mullingar is a place where people enjoy many different sports. The town has teams for Gaelic Athletic Association football and hurling, with clubs like Mullingar Shamrocks and St. Loman's Mullingar. There are also adult football teams such as Mullingar Athletic, Mullingar Town, and Mullingar Celtic.

The town has a tennis and badminton club with outdoor tennis courts and a hall for badminton games. There is also a place for greyhound racing on Thursday and Saturday evenings. Mullingar has a golf club that holds a special competition every August. The town is proud of its boxer, John Joe Nevin, who competed in the 2012 Summer Olympics.

Other sports in Mullingar include hockey, rugby, basketball, and American football. There are also places for people to ride horses and learn about horses, as well as clubs for cycling and canoe polo.
