Q2 Stadium

Q2 Stadium is a special place built just for soccer. It is located in the North Burnet area of North Austin, Texas in the United States. It is where the Austin FC team, part of Major League Soccer, plays its home games. The team started playing there in 2021, making Q2 Stadium a new and exciting spot for soccer fans.

The stadium had its very first big event on June 16, 2021. That day, it hosted a friendly match between the United States women's national team and Nigeria. This event helped welcome the new stadium and showed how it brings people together to enjoy soccer.

Site history

The land where Q2 Stadium now stands was first used in 1956 to make chemicals. It closed in 1985 because of safety problems. In 1995, the city bought the land for water services. But in 2003, while building, an explosion happened and old chemical waste was found. The city had to clean the land completely.

Later, when a soccer team wanted to move to Austin, this land was chosen as a possible site for a stadium. After discussions, the city agreed to lease the land for the stadium. The team paid for the whole building, but the city owns the land. The team can choose to keep the lease longer, too.

Construction

Construction progress, July 2020

The stadium has about 20,500 seats and was planned to cost $260 million. The team’s owner paid for it. The site also has green space, possible housing, and shops.

In March 2019, they chose the company to build it and the architect. In June 2019, the city allowed the site to be used for a stadium. In January 2021, the stadium was named Q2 Stadium after a deal with a local bank.

Public transportation

Q2 Stadium is next to McKalla station on CapMetro's Red Line commuter rail service. The service opened in 2024 to help people get to the stadium easily. Before that, the nearest station was Kramer station, about half a mile away. The new station makes it easier to walk to the stadium without crossing any roads. Plans are for Kramer station to move closer to the Broadmoor campus and be renamed North Burnet/Uptown station.

You can also take buses to the stadium using CapMetro Rapid route 803 and CapMetro Bus routes 3, 383, and 392.

Events

Q2 Stadium opened on June 16, 2021, with a friendly match between the United States and Nigeria. The stadium then became the home of Austin FC, who played their first match there on June 19, 2021, against the San Jose Earthquakes, ending in a tie.

Later, the stadium hosted its first World Cup qualifying match and a Nations League match in 2022. It also held its first non-soccer event, a concert by Willie Nelson, and a rugby tournament in 2022.

In December 2023, Q2 Stadium was chosen to host matches for the 2024 Copa América, a major soccer tournament.
