Austin FC

Austin FC is an American professional soccer club based in Austin, Texas. The club plays in Major League Soccer (MLS) in the Western Conference. It was founded in 2018 and started playing in the 2021 season.

The team's home stadium is Q2 Stadium in north Austin. They are the first major professional sports league team to play in Austin. Before 2021, Austin was the largest city in the United States without a team in a major professional sports league.

Austin FC is different from another team called Austin Bold FC, which played in the USL Championship from 2019 to 2021 at Circuit of the Americas.

History

Austin FC is the first big sports team in Austin, Texas. Before Austin FC, Austin had other soccer teams like the Austin Aztex, which moved to Orlando, and Austin Bold, which played in a different league.

In 2017, plans were made to bring a Major League Soccer team to Austin. A new stadium was planned. In 2018, the team's name, Austin FC, was announced. The team began playing in 2021.

Austin FC’s first game was in April 2021, and they won their first home game later that year. Since then, the team has had many exciting moments, like winning their first trophy. They also started a second team called Austin FC II in 2023. In 2025, they reached their first big tournament final.

Stadium

Austin FC plays in a new stadium at McKalla Place. This stadium is near The Domain, a large shopping area. The city of Austin owns the land, and a private company built the stadium. The stadium can hold 20,738 fans and had its first game on June 19, 2021.

The team also plans to build a training center called the St. David's Performance Center. It will have four soccer fields and a large indoor space. In 2022, work began on a train station called McKalla station to help fans get to games. The station opened on February 24, 2024, just in time for Austin FC's first match of that season.

Club culture

Austin FC has many supporters' groups, like Austin Anthem and Los Verdes. There is also a band called La Murga de Austin, and a group from New Braunfels named Oak Army New Braunfels.

The club colors are bright green, called "verde" in Spanish, and black. You can see these colors at Q2 Stadium. The team has sold out all their home games since they started playing there.

In February 2024, Austin FC added an armadillo design to their uniforms. They worked with Eddie Wilson, who helps keep the Armadillo World Headquarters culture alive. The team's president, Andy Loughnane, said this design honors Austin's creative spirit. The new design was shown at a special party with Asleep at the Wheel frontman, Ray Benson.

Broadcasting

In the early years of Austin FC, from 2021 to 2022, the team worked with Nexstar Media Group for broadcasts. Most games were shown on KNVA, with some also on KXAN and KBVO. Adrian Healey was the main announcer, and Michael Lahoud helped explain the games. In April 2021, Austin FC also made a deal with Univision to broadcast games in Spanish on KAKW and KTFO.

Starting in 2023, every Austin FC game could be watched using MLS Season Pass on the Apple TV app. For radio, Alt 97.5 FM provided English broadcasts with Lincoln Rose, and KLQB was the main Spanish station.

Ownership and management

Austin FC is owned by Two Oak Ventures. The CEO is Anthony Precourt. Other investors include actor Matthew McConaughey, local entrepreneur Eduardo Margain, former Dell executive Marius Haas, energy entrepreneur Bryan Sheffield, and real estate businessman David Kahn.

Affiliates and academy

Austin FC started a reserve team called Austin FC II in 2022. They began playing in 2023 at Parmer Field. In 2023, David Rodríguez was the first player from Austin FC II to join the main team. Later that year, Valentin Noël also played in a match.

Austin FC created a soccer academy in 2019. It was the first fully funded academy in central Texas and joined the MLS Next program in 2020. In 2022, Ervin Torres from the academy joined a U.S. Youth National Team. The academy has sent players and coaches to train in the Netherlands. Some academy players have signed contracts with Austin FC II and the main team.

Austin FC has done well in some competitions. They were second place in the U.S. Open Cup and the Western Conference playoffs.

In smaller events, they won the Copa Tejas two times and were second place once.
