Rowing at the 1984 Summer Olympics

Rowing at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, California, United States had 14 events for men and women. The races happened at Lake Casitas.

Because some strong rowing countries, like East Germany, the USSR, and Bulgaria, did not take part, some teams had a good chance to do well. Romania did very well, winning many gold medals in women’s events. Canada and the USA also did well in some races.

Famous rowers like Steve Redgrave started their Olympic journeys here, winning his first gold medal. Another strong rower, Elisabeta Oleniuc, later known as Elisabeta Lipă, also won her first gold medal. She went on to win more medals in later Games, even twenty years later at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens.

In the quadruple sculls events, men rowed without a coxswain, while women rowed with one. This was the same format as before.
