The King of Queens

The King of Queens is an American television sitcom. It ran on CBS from September 21, 1998, to May 14, 2007. The show had 207 episodes over nine seasons. It was created by Michael J. Weithorn and David Litt. They were also executive producers.

The show stars Kevin James and Leah Remini as Doug and Carrie Heffernan. They are a working-class couple who live in Rego Park. All episodes were filmed in front of a live studio audience.

The series was produced by Hanley Productions and CBS Productions from 1998 to 2007. In 2007, it was CBS Paramount Television. From 1998 to 2002, it was made with Columbia TriStar Television. From 2002 to 2007, it was made with Sony Pictures Television. Filming happened at Sony Pictures Studios in Culver City, California. The final season ended with a double-length series finale in 2007.

Later, Kevin James and Leah Remini worked together again in the 2016 show Kevin Can Wait. That show ended on May 7, 2018.

Plot

Doug and Carrie Heffernan are a middle-class couple who live at 3121 Aberdeen Street in the Rego Park area of Queens, New York, along with Carrie's father, Arthur Spooner. Doug works as a delivery driver for a company called International Parcel Service, and Carrie works as a legal secretary in Manhattan. They often need help with Arthur, so they hire a dog walker named Holly to spend time with him.

Doug has many friends, including Deacon Palmer, Spence Olchin, and Richie Iannucci. Deacon's wife, Kelly, is Carrie's best friend. Most of the show's scenes happen in Doug and Carrie's home, but they also show up at their jobs, a restaurant called Coopers, and their friends' houses. Even though the show shows places like the Empire State Building and the Statue of Liberty, it was actually filmed in California.

The story starts three years after Doug and Carrie got married, and how they met isn't always clear. In one episode, Doug meets Carrie when he is working as a bouncer at a nightclub. In another episode, Carrie remembers a time when Doug asked her to dance to a song in junior high school.

• Doug Heffernan (played by Kevin James) is a parcel delivery man who works for International Parcel Service. He was born in Montreal, Canada. Doug has a fun personality but often gets into trouble with his wife, Carrie, because he loves food and makes quick decisions without thinking. Doug enjoys simple things like watching sports and playing poker with his friends.
• Carrie Heffernan, originally named Simone Spooner (played by Leah Remini), is Doug's wife. She has a strong personality and can speak her mind, especially to Doug. Carrie works as a legal secretary and tries to make their relationship more romantic, which sometimes makes Doug feel uneasy. Even though they argue sometimes, they care about each other.
• Arthur Spooner (played by Jerry Stiller) is Carrie's father. He lives in the basement of Doug and Carrie's house after his own home burned down. • Deacon Palmer (played by Victor Williams) is Doug's best friend and co-worker. He is a tall, athletic man who likes his family. Deacon often helps Doug with his plans, though he doesn't like to get too involved. He has two sons and faces personal challenges during the series.
• Spencer "Spence" Olchin (played by Patton Oswalt) is another of Doug's friends. He loves science fiction and comic books, which sometimes makes him seem different from the others. • Richard "Richie" Iannucci (played by Larry Romano) is one of Doug's closest friends. He is good with women and works as a firefighter. Richie leaves the show to work on another series.

• Lou Ferrigno plays himself as the Heffernans' neighbor. He is famous for his role as The Incredible Hulk and often gets annoyed by people making Hulk references.
• Supervisor Patrick O'Boyle (played by Sam McMurray) is Doug's boss at the parcel service. He struggles with alcoholism and gambling but is still part of the workplace scenes.
• Joe Heffernan and Janet Heffernan are Doug's parents (played by Dakin Matthews and Jenny O'Hara). They live in Florida and often treat Doug like a child when they visit.

Theme song and opening sequences

The first season had a short eight-second opening with a subway train and the show's logo. Starting in the second season, the show used a new theme song called "Baby All My Life I Will Be Driving Home to You." This song was written by the show's writers and performed by Billy Vera and the Beaters.

As the show changed to widescreen, the opening credits showed Doug getting into a truck and driving past the 111th Street elevated subway station. The credits also showed Doug, Carrie, and Arthur in Queens, with famous spots like the Unisphere and Flushing Meadows–Corona Park. Originally, the starring credit was shown over the Brooklyn Bridge with the Manhattan skyline.

Critical response

When the show first started, critics had mixed feelings. Some said the humor wasn't very strong, but others liked the main actors a lot. By the time the show ended, many critics were happier with it, saying it was a fun and easy-to-watch sitcom. Overall, the show received average reviews from critics.

In 2006, Kevin James was nominated for an Emmy Award for his role as Doug Heffernan.

The King of Queens won BMI Awards in the TV Music category in 2001, 2002, 2003, and 2004. The awards went to Kurt Farquhar, Josh Goldsmith, Andrew Gross, and Cathy Yuspa.

In its last two seasons, The King of Queens was nominated for Favorite TV Comedy at the People's Choice Awards in 2007 and 2008. In 2004, Scott Heineman and Mark Waters were nominated for an Excellence in Production Design Award by the Art Directors Guild. Victor Williams was nominated in 2007 for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series by the NAACP Image Awards.

In the U.S. and Canada, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment put out all nine seasons of The King of Queens on DVD. In the UK, Paramount Home Entertainment also released the show on DVD. In Germany, Koch Media released it on DVD. Australia got the DVD releases from Paramount Home Entertainment.

Blu-ray releases

Seasons 2 and 3 came out on Blu-ray disc by Koch Media on November 21, 2008. Later, on March 26, 2015, Koch Media released the whole series on Blu-ray in HD for Region B/2.

Reunion and future

In March 2021, the cast of the show met again for a special reading to help a charity in New York City. The actors read one of the old episodes and shared happy memories of working together. In January 2024, Kevin James said there would not be new episodes because one of the actors had passed away.
