The 1952 Summer Olympics, officially called the Games of the XV Olympiad and often named Helsinki 1952, were held in Helsinki, Finland, from July 19 to August 3, 1952. Over 4,900 athletes from 69 countries came together to compete in many sports. This was a big moment for many nations because 12 teams took part in the Olympics for the very first time, including the Bahamas, Guatemala, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Israel, and the Soviet Union.

These games included 149 different events across 17 sports. Some new events were added, like women’s gymnastics and mixed equestrian competitions. A special Finnish sport called pesäpallo, which is similar to baseball, was shown as a fun extra event but did not give out medals.

The United States won the most gold medals, with 40, and the most medals overall, with 78. Several countries won their first ever Olympic medals, including Bulgaria, Lebanon, the Soviet Union, and Venezuela. Two amazing Soviet gymnasts stood out: Viktor Chukarin won four gold medals, and Maria Gorokhovskaya earned seven medals in total.

Medal table

Nina Ponomaryova, pictured here at the 1960 Summer Olympics, was the first athlete representing the Soviet Union to win a gold medal, doing so in the women's discus throw event.

The medal table shows the results from the 1952 Summer Olympics. It is organized by how many gold medals each country won, then silver, and finally bronze medals. If countries have the same number of medals, they are listed alphabetically by their country code.

Asnoldo Devonish won Venezuela's fist Olympic medal of any kind, winning bronze in the men's triple jump.

In some events, athletes tied for places. For example, in the men's floor, men's horizontal bar, and men's pommel horse events, two athletes tied for second place, so they both received silver medals and no bronze medal was given. In the men's rings and men's vault events, two athletes tied for third place, so both received bronze medals.

In boxing, both losers of the semi-final matches receive a bronze medal instead of having a match to decide the winner of the bronze.
