Brookdale University Hospital and Medical Center

Brookdale University Hospital and Medical Center, often called Brookdale Hospital, is a nonprofit medical center located in the borough of Brooklyn in New York City. It helps care for about one million people, mainly in the eastern parts of Brooklyn, including areas like Brownsville, East New York, Canarsie, and East Flatbush.

In 2016, Brookdale joined the One Brooklyn Health system, which also includes Kingsbrook Jewish Medical Center and Interfaith Medical Center. This helped the hospital work together with other medical centers in the area.

However, in 2017, Brookdale was described as having some difficulties. Earlier, in 2009, the hospital had to let go of 240 employees. Despite these challenges, Brookdale continues to provide important medical care to many people in its community.

Description

Brookdale is one of Brooklyn's largest nonprofit teaching hospitals. It is a regional center for advanced medical care, including emergency services and long-term specialty care. Brookdale also offers outpatient care at locations both on and off its campus.

The hospital focuses on rehabilitative medicine and long-term care, with special facilities for nursing and rehabilitation. It also includes housing for older adults. In 1970, NYU's Medical Center and School of Medicine started a partnership to improve training and student opportunities. In 2023, Brookdale became a recognized center for metabolic and bariatric surgery.

History

The Brownsville and East New York Hospital opened on April 11, 1921, with one building that had 75 beds. It served the areas of Brownsville, East New York, and Canarsie. The hospital was later renamed Beth-El Hospital in 1932 and then Brookdale Hospital in 1964.

Over the years, Brookdale grew and added new services. In 1993, it opened a special center to help people with AIDS, later called the Treatment for Life Center. In 2005, it became a center for treating strokes quickly. The hospital also helped during emergencies, such as when Hurricane Sandy in New York approached in 2012.

Facilities

Brookdale is a hospital and a place where doctors teach and learn. It has 530 beds for patients who need special care and more than 50 clinics for different kinds of treatments.

It also includes a place for people who need help with daily activities, a center for older adults, a place for people with mental health needs, an emergency department that works all the time, and many other services like dental care and a pharmacy with special training programs.
