Brunei at the Olympics

Brunei, known officially as Brunei Darussalam, first joined the Olympic Games in 1988, though they sent only an official and no athletes that year. The country began sending athletes to the Summer Olympic Games starting in 1996, and since then, Brunei has been represented by just one athlete in each Games, including the events in 2000, 2004, and every Olympics after 2012. Brunei has never won an Olympic medal and has never taken part in the Winter Olympic Games.

In the 2008 Summer Olympics, Brunei planned to join, but they were removed on the day of the opening ceremony because they did not register any athletes with the Olympic leaders. By 2010, Brunei was one of only three countries, along with Saudi Arabia and Qatar, that had never sent a female athlete to the Olympics, even though they had only sent four athletes total up to that point. The International Olympic Committee asked these countries to let women join.

At the first Youth Olympics in 2010, Brunei's team included two girls for the first time: Amanda Jia Xin Liew in swimming and Maziah Mahusin in hurdling. In March 2012, Brunei said that Maziah Mahusin would compete in the London Olympics. Even though she might not meet the usual standards, she could still take part because the Olympics allow every country to send athletes in athletics and swimming if they don’t have any who qualify.

The National Olympic Committee for Brunei was created and recognized by the International Olympic Committee in 1984.
