Ceratosaurus

Ceratosaurus /ˌsɛrətoʊˈsɔːrəs/ is a genus of meat-eating theropod dinosaur that lived during the Late Jurassic period, about 155 million years ago, in places like North America and Europe. The first Ceratosaurus was found and described in 1884 by a scientist named Othniel Charles Marsh in Garden Park, Colorado. This dinosaur is famous for its distinctive horn on its nose and two smaller horns above its eyes.
Ceratosaurus was about as long as two school buses put together, measuring around 5 to 7 meters (16 to 23 feet). It had sharp, blade-like teeth and strong jaws for catching prey. Its arms were short but functional, with four-fingered hands that had claws. Down its back and tail ran a row of small bony plates, which may have helped protect it.
This dinosaur belongs to a group called Ceratosauria, which split off from the family tree that eventually led to modern birds. Ceratosaurus lived alongside other big meat-eaters like Torvosaurus and Allosaurus, but scientists think they each hunted different animals to avoid competing. While some early ideas suggested Ceratosaurus used its nose horn as a weapon, newer research shows it was probably just for showing off.
History of discovery

The first known skeleton of Ceratosaurus was found and dug up by a farmer named Marshall Parker Felch in 1883 and 1884. The bones were still connected, making it almost a full skeleton, including the skull. Some important parts were missing, like some spine bones, most of the ribs, and parts of the arms and legs. The fossil was found in very hard rock, which bent the skull and spine during the process of turning into stone. This discovery was made in a place called Garden Park, Colorado, which is known for many dinosaur fossils.
After being dug up, the fossil was sent to the Peabody Museum of Natural History in New Haven, where a scientist named Othniel Charles Marsh studied it. In 1884, he described it as a new type of dinosaur, naming it Ceratosaurus nasicornis. The name means "horn lizard" because of a horn on its nose. At the time, this was the most complete theropod dinosaur found in America. Later, the fossil was moved to the National Museum of Natural History in Washington, DC, where it was shown to the public after being prepared for display.
In 1892, Marsh made the first drawing of what Ceratosaurus might have looked like, showing it as 22 feet long and 12 feet tall. Later, more accurate drawings were made, and in 1910 and 1911, the fossil was put together for display. It was shown lying on its back, fighting a Stegosaurus. The original bones are kept in the museum for scientists to study.
Additional finds in North America
After the first discovery, more Ceratosaurus fossils were found in the 1960s in Utah and in 1976 near Fruita, Colorado. These included skulls and other bones, helping scientists learn more about this dinosaur. In 1992, another fossil was found in Utah, and in 1996, a younger Ceratosaurus was found in Wyoming. These fossils are studied in museums to understand how Ceratosaurus lived and grew.
Finds outside North America
Fossils of Ceratosaurus have also been found in Tanzania, Portugal, Switzerland, and Uruguay. These discoveries show that Ceratosaurus lived in many parts of the world during the time it existed. Scientists continue to study these fossils to learn more about the dinosaur’s life and where it lived.
Description
Ceratosaurus had a body shape typical for large meat-eating dinosaurs that walked on two strong legs. Its arms were smaller. The first complete skeleton found of Ceratosaurus nasicornis measured about 5.3 meters (17 feet) long, but it is not certain if this dinosaur was fully grown.
The skull of Ceratosaurus was large compared to its body. It had a special bony horn on the top of its skull behind its nose. This horn was made from fused bones and would have had a tough outer covering in life. The skull also had sharp teeth for catching prey.
Ceratosaurus had around 20 neck and back bones. Its tail was long, about half the length of its body, and helped balance while it walked or ran. The dinosaur also had small bony plates along its back, which were likely part of its skin.
Classification
When the dinosaur Ceratosaurus nasicornis was first found and described, scientists noticed special features that made it stand out from other dinosaurs they knew at the time. Two of these features, a fused pelvis and fused foot bones, are also found in modern birds, showing a close connection between birds and dinosaurs.
Over the years, scientists have debated how Ceratosaurus fits into the family tree of dinosaurs. It was placed in different groups by various researchers. It wasn't until the 1980s that scientists began to agree that Ceratosaurus belonged to a group called Ceratosauria. More recent discoveries of related dinosaurs in South America helped clarify these relationships. Today, Ceratosaurus is considered an early branch of the dinosaur family tree, separate from the line that led to birds.
Paleobiology
Feeding
Ceratosaurus likely used its jaws to catch prey instead of its small hands. In 1998, a scientist compared its skull to that of a dog, suggesting the long teeth acted like fangs for quick bites. In 2007, researchers studied its neck muscles and found it could move its head quickly and powerfully, similar to a Komodo dragon. In 2026, they argued the long teeth were used to kill smaller prey, possibly including some small dinosaurs.
In 1986, a scientist suggested the bones of the upper jaw could move, allowing the dinosaur to widen its jaws for larger food. However, a later study in 2008 found there was no proof for this idea and it was likely not possible.
An Allosaurus bone showed tooth marks from another dinosaur, possibly Ceratosaurus, suggesting it was scavenging. Bite marks on other dinosaurs show they might have been hunting or scavenging. The many bite marks could mean these dinosaurs were making the most of resources during a dry time or that fossils were found in certain places.
Function of the nasal horn and osteoderms
In 1884, the scientist who first discovered Ceratosaurus thought the nasal horn was a powerful weapon. But later studies suggested it was more likely used for showing off or competing for mates rather than fighting. Some scientists also thought the row of bony plates along its body might have been for display too.
Forelimb function
The shortened hands of Ceratosaurus made scientists wonder if they could still grab things. Studies in 2016 compared its hand to other early theropods and suggested it could still grasp, even though it was shorter. The fingers likely allowed some movement, similar to other early theropods.
Brain and senses
One early scientist made a mold of the brain cavity and thought the brain was medium-sized but larger than in plant-eating dinosaurs. However, the bones had been glued together, so this wasn’t checked later.
Another well-preserved skull was scanned in 2005, showing parts of the brain, balance organs, and smell areas. The smell area was smaller than in Tyrannosaurus, which had a very strong sense of smell. The balance organs were similar to other theropods, suggesting similar ways of moving. The head and neck were likely held horizontally.
Fusion of metatarsals and paleopathology
The main fossil of C. nasicornis had fused foot bones, which some scientists thought might be from a healed break. But later studies found similar fusions in other dinosaurs without injury. Other health issues included a stressed foot bone and a broken tooth that kept being used.
Growth
In 2025, scientists studied bone slices from several Ceratosaurus fossils. They found that younger dinosaurs between 180 and 600 kg grew very quickly, gaining about 45% of their adult weight in a year. Smaller ceratosaurians grew much slower.
Supposed semiaquatic lifestyle
In 2004, scientists suggested Ceratosaurus lived near water and possibly swam, based on teeth found near water and its body shape. They thought it might have eaten fish, crocodiles, and turtles.
However, later studies in 2019 and 2026 argued against this, noting similar features in land-dwelling theropods. They concluded Ceratosaurus likely ate land animals and was not semiaquatic.
Paleoecology
Distribution and paleoenvironment
All North American discoveries of Ceratosaurus come from the Morrison Formation, a layer of shallow sea and river rocks in the western United States. This area is rich in dinosaur bones. The Morrison Formation is dated between 156.3 million and 146.8 million years old, placing it in the Late Jurassic period. It was a dry place with wet and dry seasons. The land stretched from New Mexico to Alberta and Saskatchewan, formed when mountains began to rise to the west. Rivers and streams carried dirt into swamps, lakes, and floodplains.
The Morrison Formation was home to many huge sauropod dinosaurs. Other dinosaurs included theropods like Koparion, Stokesosaurus, Ornitholestes, Allosaurus, and Torvosaurus, sauropods like Apatosaurus, Brachiosaurus, Camarasaurus, and Diplodocus, and ornithischians like Camptosaurus, Dryosaurus, Nanosaurus, Gargoyleosaurus, and Stegosaurus. Many other animals lived there too, including fish, frogs, salamanders, turtles, lizards, crocodiles, and pterosaurs. Plants included algae, fungi, mosses, horsetails, cycads, ginkgoes, and conifers. Trees and ferns grew along rivers, while open areas had fewer trees.
A partial Ceratosaurus specimen shows that it also lived in the Portuguese Porto Novo Member of the Lourinhã Formation. Many dinosaurs in this area were similar to those in the Morrison Formation. Europe was separated from North America by the Atlantic Ocean, and Portugal was separated from other parts of Europe. The similarity between the dinosaur groups in Portugal and North America suggests there may have been a land bridge that allowed animals to move between the two areas.
Niche partitioning
In the Morrison and Lourinhã Formation, Ceratosaurus fossils are often found with other large theropods, including Torvosaurus and Allosaurus. Ceratosaurus was less common, appearing about 7.5 times less often than Allosaurus in places where both lived.
Some researchers tried to explain how these dinosaurs could live together without competing too much. One idea is that Ceratosaurus may have eaten different prey than Allosaurus, possibly helping them avoid direct competition. The long teeth of Ceratosaurus might have helped it recognize members of its own species or served other social purposes. Another idea is that Ceratosaurus may have focused on smaller herbivorous dinosaurs, while Allosaurus ate a variety of prey and Torvosaurus may have preferred sauropods. These differences might have allowed them to share the same environment without competing too strongly.

Ceratosaurus is a popular dinosaur often shown in books and movies. It appeared in novels like C.H. Murray Chapman's Dragons at home from 1924 and in T. H. White's The Sword in the Stone from 1939. In the 1914 silent movie Brute Force by D. W. Griffith, a model of Ceratosaurus scared off cave people. This movie wrongly showed dinosaurs and humans living together and made people think dinosaurs would attack without reason. Ceratosaurus was also in the 1956 documentary The Animal World and the 1966 movie One Million Years B.C., fighting a Triceratops. More recently, it appeared in the 2001 film Jurassic Park III.
