Chambers Street is a two-way street located in the borough of Manhattan in New York City. It begins at River Terrace in Battery Park City to the west and stretches eastward past important places such as PS 234 (the Independence School), the Borough of Manhattan Community College, and Stuyvesant High School. The street ends at the impressive Manhattan Municipal Building on 1 Centre Street.

Between Broadway and Centre Street, Chambers Street marks the northern edge of the area surrounding New York City Hall and the Tweed Courthouse. Directly across from the Tweed Courthouse stands the Surrogate's Courthouse for Manhattan. A bit further west, on the north side of Chambers Street, you’ll find 280 Broadway, known as the Marble Palace.

History

Chambers Street is named after John Chambers, an important person at Trinity Church in Manhattan. He worked there for many years and was related to John Jay.

Before 1971, Chambers Street extended past Centre Street as New Chambers Street, which went through the Municipal Building's archway. In 1971, New Chambers Street was closed to create a walking area at 1 Police Plaza. Later, from 2010 to 2015, Chambers Street was rebuilt.

Transportation

The New York City Subway has three stations on Chambers Street:

There is no bus service west of North End Avenue. From there, the M22 bus runs the entire length of the street, with eastbound buses heading south on Broadway. The M20 uses the street west of West Broadway westbound, or West Street eastbound.
