Colonial architecture
Adapted from Wikipedia · Discoverer experience
Colonial architecture is a special style of building that grew when people moved to new places. These builders mixed the styles from their old homes with new ideas that worked better in their new location. They often made houses and other buildings look like ones they knew, but changed them to fit the local weather and environment.
This kind of architecture helps us see how people lived long ago when they settled in new lands. By looking at these buildings, we can learn about the history and culture of both the places people came from and where they moved to.
There are many different types of colonial architecture around the world, each with its own unique look and story. Studying these buildings lets us understand more about the past and how different cultures influenced each other.

Eritrea was Italy's first African colony. In its first capital, Massawa, you can find many old buildings that mix Italian styles with local designs. The city of Asmara also has lots of Italian-style buildings, and in 2017, some of these were named a special UNESCO World Heritage Site. Many of these buildings were built during a time when a leader named Benito Mussolini wanted to make Asmara feel like a smaller version of Rome.
In Somalia, especially in Mogadishu, there are also many buildings from when Italy ruled the area. Italian builders created big plans and important places such as a large arch for a king, a big church, and government buildings. One special building, the Villa Somalia, is still used today as the home of Somalia’s leader. In Somalia, Italians built inside the existing cities rather than creating new towns.
In Libya, , Italians also built many structures in Italian styles. In Tripoli, they built a church in a special Italian design. Later, under Mussolini, more grand buildings were added, like a long sea-walk in Benghazi and new areas for Italian families. These buildings often mixed Italian styles with ideas from local Arab designs to suit the hot, dry climate.
In the Dodecanese islands, Italians built many modern and stylish buildings, and even today many of these structures are still well-preserved. In Albania, Italy’s short time as a ruler left behind several important buildings made in a clean, simple style.
