Jason Robert Brown

Jason Robert Brown (born June 20, 1970) is an American musical theatre composer, lyricist, and playwright. He is known for creating music that mixes pop-rock sounds with powerful, story-driven words. His work brings a special kind of energy and emotion to the stage.

Brown has won three Tony Awards for his creations. Two of his most famous shows are Parade and The Bridges of Madison County. These shows are loved for their beautiful music and deep stories that make audiences think and feel.

His music often tells real and moving stories, making him a favorite in the world of musical theatre. Brown's talent has inspired many, and his work continues to be enjoyed by people all over the world.

Career

Jason Robert Brown grew up near New York City and studied music at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York. Two shows, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street and Sunday in the Park with George, greatly inspired him. He started his career in New York City, working as an arranger, conductor, and pianist.

Brown’s first big success came with Songs for a New World, an off-Broadway show featuring his pop-rock style music. One of its songs, “Stars and the Moon,” became very popular. He later wrote songs for the Broadway musical Parade, which told a true story about a trial. For this work, Brown won a 1999 Tony Award for Best Original Score.

Brown also created the musical The Last Five Years, inspired by his own early marriage. This two-person show tells a relationship’s story from both sides. Though it didn’t run long, it became popular among fans of musical theatre. He went on to write music for many other shows, including The Bridges of Madison County, for which he won more Tony Awards.

Brown continues to create new musicals and teaches music at the University of Southern California. He also performs his own music, often with his band, the Caucasian Rhythm Kings.

Musical style

Jason Robert Brown’s music is known for being very lively and having unique harmonies, which means it doesn’t always follow the usual patterns. He often asks singers to hit a wide range of notes. His words for songs include clever rhymes inside the lines, and his tunes don’t always fit into the common four-beat pattern.

Brown likes to write songs in a special way, called AABA' form, but he sometimes changes this in his shows. One of his most special parts is writing love songs for two people to sing together. All five of his famous duets follow a unique style: they feature a man, a woman, and both together, use a special rhythm in the middle part, and four of them end with the couple singing the same note.

In 2005, he was named by Mark Shenton as one of the leading new theatre composers, along with Michael John LaChiusa, Adam Guettel, Andrew Lippa, and Jeanine Tesori.

Personal life

Jason Robert Brown was born in Ossining, New York. He and his first wife, Theresa O'Neill, inspired his musical The Last Five Years. Since 2003, he has been married to composer Georgia Stitt, and they have two daughters together.

Major works

Jason Robert Brown has created many popular musicals and albums. His musical Parade won awards for its music, and a newer version of it returned to Broadway in 2023. Another musical, The Bridges of Madison County, also won awards. Brown’s other works include The Last Five Years, which was later made into a movie, and 13, which had a film version on Netflix.

Brown has also released several solo albums. His first album, Wearing Someone Else's Clothes, features songs he wrote for various projects. A later album, How We React and How We Recover, came out in 2018. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he recorded a virtual concert album called Coming From Inside The House.

Other works

Jason Robert Brown has created many different pieces of music and shows. In 2005, he made Chanukah Suite, a special music piece that mixes traditional songs with lively rock and roll sounds, inspired by Leonard Bernstein.

He also wrote "Jason's Song (Gave It Away)" while he was in Los Angeles. Ariana Grande asked him to create a song for her album, and it was later included in the special version of Dangerous Woman.

Brown worked on several other projects too, such as the Off-Broadway play The Waverly Gallery, which ran from March to May in 2000, and he provided music for it. He also helped with music for John and Jen, A New Brain, Wonder Pets!, and New York Rock. In 2011, he was the composer and conductor for The Trumpet of the Swan, a stage show made by Marsha Norman for the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.

Actress Lauren Kennedy, who first played Cathy in the Chicago version of The Last Five Years, released an album called Songs of Jason Robert Brown. This album includes songs from his past shows, plus some new songs that had never been released before.
