The Jewish Theological Seminary (JTS) is a Conservative Jewish education organization in New York City, New York. It is an important center for learning and teaching within Conservative Judaism and also a place for deep study of Jewish history, culture, and traditions. The Jewish Theological Seminary Library is one of the biggest and most important collections of books and materials about Jewish life and beliefs in the whole world.

The JTS started in 1886, thanks to two leaders, Sabato Morais and Henry Pereira Mendes. Since then, it has grown into a key place for training rabbis, teachers, and scholars who help keep Jewish traditions alive and strong.

History

The Jewish Theological Seminary (JTS) began in 1886 when two rabbis, Sabato Morais and Henry Pereira Mendes, along with some leaders from New York and Philadelphia, created it to keep Jewish traditions alive. The first class of ten students met in 1887 at a synagogue in New York City.

As time passed, leaders like Solomon Schechter helped shape JTS into a center for learning and tradition. Schechter started programs that brought Jewish teachings to the public through radio and television. He also started a summer camp for Jewish children to learn more about their heritage.

Later leaders continued to grow JTS. They added new schools for teachers, musicians, and leaders. In 1966, a fire damaged the library, but JTS kept growing. In recent years, JTS has welcomed students from all backgrounds, making sure everyone feels included.

JTS and the Conservative movement

JTS started as the main place for Conservative Judaism in America. The group of Conservative synagogues, called the United Synagogue of America, began when a leader named Solomon Schechter worked at JTS.

Later, under leaders like Louis Finkelstein, JTS sometimes followed older traditions more than other Conservative Jewish groups. But after that, leaders such as Gerson Cohen and Ismar Schorsch helped JTS become a strong supporter of Conservative Judaism. Today, JTS sees itself as a key place for Conservative Judaism around the world. Another important school for Conservative Jewish leaders is the Ziegler School of Rabbinic Studies in California, which was started by JTS graduates in 1996.

Current educational programs

The Rabbinical School offers a detailed program that leads to becoming a rabbi, requiring five to six years of study. Students learn about important Jewish texts like the Talmud, Midrash, and Bible, as well as Jewish history, Hebrew language, and other skills. They spend their second year studying in Jerusalem.

The Cantorial School trains students to become cantors or teachers of Jewish music. Students study music, Jewish music, and Jewish texts over five years, with the first year usually spent in Israel.

The Graduate School provides advanced studies in many areas of Jewish learning, offering degrees such as MA, DHL, and PhD. Topics include ancient Judaism, Bible studies, Jewish history, Jewish literature, and more.

The William Davidson Graduate School of Jewish Education, supported by a generous gift, trains teachers for Jewish schools and other settings, offering both master’s and doctoral degrees.

List College is the undergraduate school connected to Columbia University, where students often study at both schools.
