Kirovo-Chepetsk

Kirovo-Chepetsk (Russian: Ки́рово-Чепе́цк) is a town in Kirov Oblast, Russia. It is situated at the confluence of the Cheptsa and the Vyatka Rivers, about 20 kilometers (12 miles) east of the city of Kirov.

The town has seen changes in its population over the years. In the year 2010, about 80,921 people lived there, according to the census. Earlier, in 2002, the population was recorded as 90,303, and in 1989, during the Soviet era, it was 92,382 people.

Kirovo-Chepetsk is an important place in the region, contributing to the local culture and community.

Geography

The 50th eastern meridian runs straight through the town of Kirovo-Chepetsk. This special line helps people all over the world know where they are on maps.

History

Kirovo-Chepetsk began in the mid-15th century as a small village named Ust-Cheptsa. It became an official town in 1955.

In 1954, an ice hockey team called “Khimik," meaning "Chemist," was started there. Later, in 1964, the team was renamed Olimpiya Kirovo-Chepetsk. Some well-known players who started with this team are Alexander Maltsev, Vladimir Myshkin, and Andrey Trefilov.

Administrative and municipal status

Within the framework of administrative divisions, Kirovo-Chepetsk serves as the administrative center of Kirovo-Chepetsky District, even though it is not a part of it. As an administrative division, it is incorporated separately as the Town of Kirovo-Chepetsk—an administrative unit with the status equal to that of the districts. As a municipal division, the Town of Kirovo-Chepetsk is incorporated as Kirovo-Chepetsk Urban Okrug.

Notable people

Kirovo-Chepetsk is proud to call home two famous ice hockey players who played for the Soviet national team: Vladimir Myshkin and Alexander Maltsev. The town is also the hometown of Yury Patrikeyev, who won a bronze medal at the Olympics and was a European champion in wrestling for Armenia.
