Kista

Kista is a district located in the borough of Rinkeby-Kista in Stockholm, Sweden. It holds an important position between Sweden's main airport, the Stockholm-Arlanda International Airport, and central Stockholm, and it lies close to the main national highway E4.

The area includes both homes for people to live and spaces for businesses, especially in the fields of telecommunications and information technology. Because of the many research projects in this area, it is known as Kista Science City and serves as the research park for the KTH Royal Institute of Technology.

Kista Science City is where much of the world's work on developing the 4G LTE mobile network happens, following standards set by European ETSI. Much of this important work takes place at Ericsson, a big company with headquarters right in Kista.

The district was named after an old farm called "Kista Gård," which is still there today. Building the modern part of Kista began in the 1970s. Many of the streets are named after places in Denmark, Iceland, Greenland, and the Faroe Islands. Before the Mall of Scandinavia opened, Kista Galleria was the largest shopping center in the Stockholm region. Because of its strong technology industries, people in the 1980s called it "Chipsta," and after Sweden joined the European Union in 1995, it was sometimes called Europe's "Silicon Valley."

Overview

Kista is a district in Stockholm, Sweden. Its name comes from a farmhouse that existed in the 1600s. The word "Kista" used to mean a place where livestock was traded.

Kista is very important for Sweden's economy. Many big technology companies started there in the 1970s, and some still have offices there today. It is one of the biggest places for technology companies in Europe.

Unfortunately, in recent years, some people have felt less safe in Kista due to crime. This has caused some companies and organizations to move away, and there are efforts underway to make the area safer.

Research and higher learning

Kista is home to parts of the KTH Royal Institute of Technology, like Wireless@KTH, and Stockholm University. It also has important research institutes such as the Swedish Institute of Computer Science and the Swedish Defence Research Agency, FOI. Big companies like Ericsson, Swedish IBM, and Tele 2 are based there too.

The area also hosts the Swedish Co-Location Centre for EIT Digital, which works with KTH Royal Institute of Technology to offer a special two-year master’s program.

Parks and open spaces

Kista doesn’t have big, famous parks, but it has plenty of smaller green areas. On average, each person in Kista has about 94 square meters of green space within a half-kilometer radius.
