Adapted from Wikipedia ยท Discoverer experience

This is a List of historical cities and towns of Mongolia. Mongolia is a landlocked country in East and Central Asia. It is bordered by Russia to the north and China to the south, east and west. Over time, many places in Mongolia have grown, changed, or even disappeared, but they all tell us important stories about the past. Ulaanbaatar, the capital and largest city, is home to about 45% of the population today, but there are many other old towns and cities that once played big roles in history. Studying these places helps us understand how people lived long ago and how Mongolia has developed.

Special characteristics

Mongolian cities include those built in Mongolia and in areas influenced by Mongol rule. These cities developed in a society where most people were nomads. It's not true that Mongolia never had cities or that everyone was always nomadic. Research shows that Mongolia has had cities for more than 2000 years.

Historical towns and settlements

Mongolia has many old towns and settlements from different times in history. Some of the oldest places are from the time of the Xiongnu Empire, like Lungcheng, which was their capital. Later, during the Rouran period, Mume was an important capital.

In the time of the Mongol Empire, Karakorum was the capital city. Other important places include Ikh Khuree, which later became Ulaanbaatar, the current capital. Many towns were founded during the Northern Yuan and Qing periods, such as Choir, Khovd, Tsetserleg, and Uliastai.
