Westfield World Trade Center

Westfield World Trade Center is a large shopping mall located at the World Trade Center complex in Manhattan, New York City. It is run and managed by Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield. The mall opened its doors on August 16, 2016, becoming the biggest shopping area in Manhattan, featuring 125 different stores where people can shop.

Before this mall was built, there was another shopping place called The Mall at the World Trade Center. This older mall was located underground at the original World Trade Center. Sadly, it was destroyed during the events of September 11, 2001 attacks. The new Westfield World Trade Center was created to replace it and bring back a vibrant shopping space for the community.

Original mall (1975–2001)

The Mall at the World Trade Center was an underground shopping area under the original World Trade Center in New York City. It opened in 1975 and was the biggest mall in the city at the time. You could find many stores there, like Borders, The Children's Place, J.Crew, and Gap, along with places to eat.

Sadly, this mall was destroyed during the events of September 11, 2001. When a plane hit the nearby towers, many people inside the mall had to run for safety. The mall was badly damaged and could not be fixed, so it was torn down as part of cleaning up the area. Some fun statues from a store were saved and moved to museums.

Current mall (2016–present)

The Westfield World Trade Center mall has about 365,000 square feet of shopping space. Though it covers only half the area of the old mall, it has two levels instead of one. The National September 11 Memorial & Museum is nearby, taking up some of the space.

Construction started in 2007, and Westfield Corporation joined to help build and manage the mall in 2012. By August 16, 2016, the mall opened with many stores and a food court. Famous singers John Legend and Leslie Odom Jr. helped celebrate the opening. Over time, more stores joined, though some spaces were still empty.
