Who are the Berbers?
The Berbers, also called Amazigh or Imazighen, are an ethnic group from North Africa. They have lived in this area for thousands of years. Today, you can find them mainly in countries like Morocco, Algeria, Libya, and Tunisia. Some also live in Mauritania, Mali, and Niger.
Their Language and History
Berbers speak Berber languages, which are part of the big Afroasiatic language family. People have known about the Berbers since very old times, with writings from Ancient Egypt. In the past, they did not call themselves Berbers but used their own names for their groups.
Culture and Traditions
Berber culture is rich and colorful. They are famous for their beautiful crafts, like weaving special carpets called kilims with unique patterns. They also make colorful silver jewelry. Berber food is tasty too, with dishes like couscous, a fluffy grain dish, and tajine, a slow-cooked stew. Music and dancing are important parts of their celebrations.
Berber people have lived in North Africa for a very long time, and their traditions continue to be important today. Their culture is celebrated in many places, and people around the world enjoy learning about their unique way of life.
