Mali

Mali is a beautiful country in West Africa. It is landlocked, meaning it does not touch the ocean. Mali is the eighth-largest country in Africa and the 23rd largest in the whole world!

Where It Is

Mali shares borders with many countries. To the north is Algeria. To the east is Niger. To the northwest is Mauritania. To the south are Burkina Faso and Ivory Coast. To the west are Guinea and Senegal. The capital city is Bamako, where many people live.

Rich History

Long ago, Mali was part of amazing empires like the Ghana Empire, the Mali Empire, and the Songhai Empire. The city of Timbuktu became a famous place for learning and culture. People from all over came to share ideas and stories.

Nature and Life

The north of Mali reaches into the hot Sahara Desert. The south, where most people live, has green areas near the Niger River and Senegal River. Mali has many languages, with Bambara being the most spoken. The country is known for its gold and has a young population, with many children and teenagers.

  • Mali means "the place where the king lives" and suggests strength.
  • Traditional clothing often includes bright robes called boubous.
  • Music is very important. Famous musicians include Toumani Diabaté, a master of the kora, and the Tuareg band Tinariwen.
