What is a City-State?
A city-state is a special kind of place. It is a city that is also its own country! Unlike big countries with many towns and farms, a city-state is just one city that takes care of itself. It makes its own rules, has its own money, and looks after its people.
Famous Old City-States
Long ago, many important city-states existed. Some of the most famous were Rome, Athens, and Venice. These places were centers of trade, learning, and culture. They were very important in history and shaped how we live today.
Modern City-States
Today, only a few city-states remain. The biggest and most well-known is Singapore. Singapore is an island city with lots of people and busy ports. It has its own money, army, and rules.
Other modern city-states include Monaco and Vatican City. Monaco is a tiny country next to France, famous for its casino and beautiful views. Vatican City is the smallest country in the world and the home of the Pope.
Special Cities
Some cities are not fully independent countries, but they have a lot of freedom. Places like Hong Kong and Dubai make their own rules in many ways, even though they belong to bigger countries. They are often called city-states because they act like small, independent cities.
City-states are special places where one city is also a whole country. They have their own rules, money, and leaders, making them unique and important parts of our world.
