Eileithyia: The Gentle Goddess of Birth

Eileithyia was an ancient Greek goddess who helped women during childbirth. People believed she could make having a baby easier and safer. She was the daughter of two very important gods, Zeus and Hera.

Many women in ancient Greece prayed to Eileithyia when they were expecting a baby. Midwives, the women who helped with births, also asked her for guidance. Eileithyia was especially loved in places like Crete, where people thought she was born in a cave called Amnisos.

The famous poet Pindar wrote about Eileithyia, and she was remembered for bringing comfort to mothers. Even today, her story reminds us of the kindness and care needed when welcoming new life.
