Freedom of the City
The Freedom of the City is a special honor given by a city or town. It is like getting a big, friendly welcome from everyone who lives there. This tradition started a very long time ago, from old ideas in medieval times.
Today, cities give this honor to people who have done something wonderful for the community or to very important visitors. Countries like the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, Canada, and New Zealand still use this tradition. It reminds us of the past when people were given special rights in their towns.
Sometimes, this honor is also given to military groups that the city trusts very much. This is called the Freedom of Entry. It lets the military march through the city, showing the strong friendship between the soldiers and the people. In the past, a small gold box might be given to remember this special day, but this is rare now.
In some places, like the United States, important people might receive something called the Key to the City. This is a symbolic award, like a big, shiny key that shows the city welcomes them as a trusted friend.
The Freedom of the City of London has a long history, first recorded in 1237. Today, people can become freemen through family ties, apprenticeships, or special nominations. New freemen join in a ceremony where they receive a guide for living honorably and a certificate.
In Dublin, the freedom of the city is usually given to important visitors or national leaders. Freemen there have old privileges, like voting in certain elections.
In Canada, freedom of the city is a special honor given to military units. For example, The Calgary Highlanders (10th Canadians) hold parades to remember important battles.
In some cities, like Toronto, Vancouver, and Montreal, a key to the city might be given to important business leaders, musicians, and political leaders. In 2016, the Canadian artist Drake received a key to the city of Toronto from the mayor John Tory.
The Freedom of the City is an old honour given to military groups. It lets them march into the city with drums and flags. This tradition began in ancient Rome. Today, this freedom is just a ceremony to thank military units for their service. The ceremony often includes a happy parade through the city.
