What is Friday?

Friday is the day after Thursday and before Saturday. It is the end of the work week in many places, and people often get ready for the weekend.

In some countries, Friday is the start of the weekend. For example, in Israel and Iran, people rest on Friday and Saturday.

The Name Friday

The word Friday comes from old languages. In Old English, it was called “frīġedæġ,” meaning the “day of Frig.” Frig was a goddess linked to Venus, a loved Roman goddess.

Many languages call Friday the “day of Venus.” It is vendredi in French, venerdì in Italian, and viernes in Spanish.

Special Fridays

Some Fridays have special names. Good Friday is the Friday before Easter. In Thailand, the color for Friday is blue.

Friday can be a happy day when people get to wear relaxed clothes at work. This is called Casual Friday.
