Welcome to Gera
Gera is a lovely city in Thuringia, a state in Germany. It is the third-largest city in Thuringia, after Erfurt and Jena. About 93,000 people call Gera their home.
Gera is part of a line of six big cities called the Thüringer Städtekette. This line stretches from Eisenach in the west all the way to Gera in the east.
A Long History
Gera was first mentioned in the year 995. It grew into a city during the 1300s. For many years, it was an important home for the royal House of Reuss. Later, Gera became the capital of the Principality of Reuss-Gera and the People's State of Reuss. In the 1800s, Gera became famous for its textile industry and grew quickly.
Beautiful Buildings and Parks
Today, visitors to Gera can see old buildings from its royal history and many beautiful structures from its busy industrial days between 1870 and 1930. One special place is the Orangerie, a beautiful garden and art space. Another is the Otto-Dix-Haus, where the famous painter Otto Dix was born in 1891. His drawings, prints, and paintings are displayed there.
The city also has lovely parks like the Küchengarten, which has a park and a theatre. The old town hall is one of Germany’s largest Renaissance buildings, with a tall tower almost 60 meters high.
