What is Hangul Day?
Hangul Day is a special holiday that celebrates the Korean alphabet, called Hangul. It reminds everyone in South Korea and North Korea of this wonderful way to read and write. In South Korea, people celebrate Hangul Day on October 9, and in North Korea, they celebrate it on January 15.
Why Do People Celebrate It?
Hangul Day started in 1926 by the Korean Language Society. They wanted to honor the day when Hangul was first shared with the world in 1446. The alphabet was created a long time ago and helps people connect through language and culture.
Fun Times
In South Korea, Hangul Day became an official holiday in 1949, giving people a day off from work. It stopped being a holiday for a while, but then it became a holiday again in 2012. Even in China, in a place called the Yanbian Korean Autonomous Prefecture, people also celebrate a special day for the Korean language on September 2.
