Herod the Great
Herod the Great was a king who ruled a land called Judea a long time ago. He was chosen to be king by the leaders of Rome. Herod is most famous for building many big and beautiful places.
One of his biggest projects was making the Second Temple in Jerusalem much larger and more wonderful. Many people visit a special wall called the Western Wall that is part of this temple today.
Herod was born in a place called Idumea, which is south of Judea. His family came from a town named Petra in Jordan. Even though his family had roots in another place, Herod grew up following the traditions of the Jewish people.
After Herod died, the land he ruled was divided among his sons. One son, Herod Antipas, ruled places like Galilee. Another son, Herod Archelaus, ruled areas such as Samaria and Idumea. Many stories and writings about Herod come from a historian named Josephus, who lived around the same time.
Herod built many important places, including strong forts like Masada and Herodium, and new cities such as Caesarea Maritima. His buildings helped many people and made his kingdom famous.
