The Kingdom of León

The Kingdom of León was an old and special place in the northwest of the Iberian Peninsula. It began in the year 910 when leaders moved their capital from Oviedo to the city of León.

León was first built by soldiers from the Roman Empire called the Legio VII Gemina. The city became a busy spot for trading gold from mines near Las Médulas. Over time, many different groups lived there, like the Visigoths and the Moors.

The kingdom grew bigger and stronger. It later joined with the Kingdom of Castile and became part of modern Spain. People remember León for its beautiful old buildings and its important place in history.

The city of León has many lovely old churches and artworks. One famous building is the Basilica of San Isidoro. It shows beautiful carvings and paintings from long ago. The kingdom was also known for its smart leaders and its role in protecting the land.

The Camino de Santiago passed through León, bringing visitors from all over the world. These travelers shared new ideas and traditions, making León a lively and important place in history.
