Welcome to Maputo!

Maputo is the capital city of Mozambique. It is a busy and exciting place where many people live and work. The city is near the Indian Ocean, which makes it a important port for ships.

A Special Place

Maputo is close to the borders of Eswatini and South Africa. Over one million people call Maputo home! The city is built around a beautiful bay where several rivers meet the sea.

History and Growth

Long ago, Maputo was a small fishing village of the Tsonga people. Portuguese explorers came and built a fort there in 1781. When Mozambique became independent in 1975, Maputo became the country’s capital and was renamed after the Maputo River.

Things to See

Today, Maputo is full of interesting sights. You can visit wide streets lined with trees, cultural places like Independence Square and City Hall, and the central market. The city’s port is very important for trading things like cotton, sugar, and hardwood.
