What is a Mihrab?
A mihrab is a special part of a mosque. A mosque is a place where Muslims come together to pray. The mihrab is a small space built into a wall. This wall is called the qibla wall because it points toward the Kaaba in Mecca. When Muslims pray, they face this direction.
The mihrab helps everyone in the mosque know where to face during their prayers. It is an important symbol in Islamic worship. Next to the mihrab, there is often a raised platform called a minbar. This is where the imam, the leader of the prayer, stands to speak.
Why is the Mihrab Special?
The word mihrab comes from Arabic. It is a key feature in many mosques all around the world. It helps create a peaceful and focused space for prayer. Mihrabs are often beautifully decorated with patterns, lines, and writing from the Qur'an. These decorations make the mihrab a lovely and special place for prayer.
A Famous Mihrab
One famous mihrab is in the Great Mosque of Cordoba. It was made by a leader named Al-Hakam II and is very fancy. The mihrab there is big enough to fill a whole room and has special designs including mosaics and glass work. This mihrab is a wonderful example of how beautiful and important these special spaces can be.
