Mission San Gabriel Arcángel

Mission San Gabriel Arcángel is a special old place in San Gabriel, California. It was started a long time ago by the Spanish Empire on September 8, 1771. It is the fourth of twenty-one Spanish missions in California. People call it the “Godmother of the Pueblo of Los Angeles.”

The mission was named after the Archangel Gabriel. It has special parts like capped buttresses and tall, narrow windows that make it look unique. Inside, you can see a beautiful painting of Our Lady of Sorrows that still hangs near the old high altar and reredos.

Today, visitors can explore the church, museum, and grounds. The museum has old mission items, books, and religious objects. The grounds show where people once cooked, made soap, stored water, and more. There is also a gift shop for visitors to enjoy.

The mission has a big stone cross in its cemetery, which is the oldest Catholic cemetery in California. Many important people are buried there, including priests and respected community members.
