Mount Mitchell is the tallest mountain in the Appalachian Mountains and the highest peak in mainland North America east of the Mississippi River. It is located near Burnsville in Yancey County, North Carolina.

The mountain stands at 6,684 feet (2,037 m) above sea level. It is part of the beautiful Pisgah National Forest and is protected by Mount Mitchell State Park. Because it is so tall, it offers amazing views for hikers and nature lovers.

Mount Mitchell has a special forest called the Southern Appalachian spruce-fir forest. This forest has red spruce and Fraser fir trees. The mountain’s high altitude means it gets a lot of rain, snow, and fog. Even with these challenges, the area stays green and full of wildflowers in the summer.

People have visited Mount Mitchell for a long time. The Cherokee people called it Attakulla. Today, a road connects the Blue Ridge Parkway to a trail that leads to the summit, making it easy for everyone to explore this wonderful place.
