The Appalachian Mountains

The Appalachian Mountains, often called the Appalachians, are a big group of mountains in North America. They stretch from Canada all the way down to Alabama in the United States. These mountains are very old, even older than the Rocky Mountains!

The highest peak in the Appalachians is Mount Mitchell in North Carolina. It stands very tall and is the highest point in the whole area. People love to hike and explore these beautiful mountains.

One of the most famous paths in the Appalachians is the Appalachian Trail. This long hiking trail starts at Mount Katahdin in Maine and ends at Springer Mountain in Georgia. Many people walk this trail to enjoy the forests, rivers, and views.

Long ago, the land that became the Appalachians looked very different. Big pieces of Earth’s crust moved and crashed together, making mountains grow. Over time, wind, rain, and ice shaped the mountains into the beautiful ridges and valleys we see today.

The Appalachians are full of interesting plants and animals. You can find tall trees like maple and oak, as well as animals like deer, black bears, and many birds. The forests and streams are home to many creatures, making it a wonderful place for nature lovers to visit.

These mountains have a special story. They remind us of Earth’s powerful changes and the beauty found in nature. Whether you like hiking, learning about history, or just enjoying the scenery, the Appalachians offer many adventures!
