National Medal of Technology and Innovation
The National Medal of Technology and Innovation is a special award given by the president of the United States. It is given to people in the United States who create amazing new inventions and ideas. These inventions help make important changes in how we use science and tools in our daily lives.
Anyone can receive this award. This includes an individual person, a team of people working together, or even a whole company. It is the highest award in the United States for someone who helps improve technology and makes life better for everyone.
Many famous inventors and creative thinkers have received this medal for their work. Their ideas have led to new ways to solve problems, create better products, and even change whole industries. This award shows how much the country values people who use their minds to invent and improve our world.
The National Medal of Technology was created in 1980 by the United States Congress. The first medals were given in 1985 by President Ronald Reagan. Twelve people and one company got the award. This included Steve Jobs and Stephen Wozniak, the founders of Apple Computer.
In 2007, the name of the award was changed to the “National Medal of Technology and Innovation.” This change made the award focus more on great work in technology and science.
Each year, the United States Patent and Trademark Office asks people to suggest new names for the National Medal of Technology and Innovation. The names go to a special group that helps pick the best ones. After this, the U.S. secretary of commerce suggests who should get the award to the president. Finally, the president announces the winners.
So far, more than 135 people and 12 companies have received this award for their important work. These laureates have done amazing things to improve how we live with new and smart technology.
Some of the people who received the award include:
- Fred Brooks, Erich Bloch, and Bob Evans for their work on the IBM System/360
- Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak for developing the personal computer
- Ralph Landau for his work in petrochemical processes
- Harold Rosen and Allen E. Puckett for their work on geostationary communications satellites
- Joseph F. Sutter for his contributions to the development of the commercial airliner jet, the 747
