New York City Hall

New York City Hall is a very important building where the city’s leaders work. It is in the Civic Center area of Lower Manhattan, right in the middle of City Hall Park. This building has been there for a long time, since 1812, and it is the oldest city hall in the United States that still has its original offices.

Inside, you can find the office of the Mayor of New York City and a big room where the New York City Council meets. Many other city workers are in the big Manhattan Municipal Building nearby.

New York City Hall is very special because it is a National Historic Landmark and is on the National Register of Historic Places. It was protected in 1966 to keep its outside looking the same, and in 1976, its inside was protected too.

The building has a beautiful design with steps leading to the entrance and a grand room inside with columns and a dome. It is a place where important people, like Abraham Lincoln and Ulysses S. Grant, have been honored. Many special events happen there too.
