Nicolaus Copernicus
Nicolaus Copernicus was a very smart person who lived a long time ago. He was born on 19 February 1473 in Toruń, a city in Royal Prussia. Royal Prussia was part of the Crown of the Kingdom of Poland. Copernicus grew up speaking German, and he later learned many languages, including Latin, Greek, and Italian.
Copernicus studied many things, like astronomy and medicine. He worked as a doctor, a mathematician, and even a leader in his community. But he is most famous for an idea he had about our world.
Copernicus thought that the Sun was at the center of our solar system, not the Earth. Before his time, most people believed the Earth was the center. He wrote a big book about this idea called De revolutionibus orbium coelestium. He shared his ideas with friends, and they slowly began to change how people thought about space.
Many years after Copernicus, other scientists like Johannes Kepler and Galileo Galilei helped prove his idea was right. Today, we know the Sun is at the center, just as Copernicus said. His smart thoughts helped start the history of science and changed the way we learn about the universe.
