Project Gemini

Project Gemini was NASA's second program to send people into space. It came after Project Mercury and helped get ready for the Apollo program, which aimed to land humans on the Moon. Gemini ran from 1961 to 1966.

Why Gemini Was Important

The main goal of Gemini was to learn things needed for Apollo. Astronauts showed they could stay in space for almost two weeks. They also practiced moving around their spacecraft and meeting up with other spacecraft. This helped Apollo focus on landing on the Moon.

The Spacecraft and Missions

The Gemini spacecraft carried two astronauts each time it flew. Ten crews with sixteen different astronauts flew in low Earth orbit during 1965 and 1966. All missions launched from Launch Complex 19 at Cape Kennedy Air Force Station in Florida. They used a special rocket called the Titan II GLV.

Many Gemini spacecraft and models are on display in museums around the world. You can see them at places like the National Air and Space Museum in Washington, D.C., the Stafford Air & Space Museum in Oklahoma, and the California Museum of Science and Industry in Los Angeles.
