The Quraysh Tribe

The Quraysh were an important Arab tribe that lived in the city of Mecca. They were made up of ten main clans, and one of the most famous was the Banu Hashim. This clan was very special because it was the birthplace of Muhammad, the founder of Islam.

By the 7th century, the Quraysh became very wealthy. They were great traders and controlled important trade routes. These routes connected places like the Indian Ocean, East Africa, and the Mediterranean. Because of their trading skills, the Quraysh were very influential in the area.

The Quraysh took care of the Kaaba, a very important building in Mecca. Many people visited the Kaaba for special ceremonies. The Quraysh were also known for their wisdom and leadership. After Muhammad passed away, many leaders of the growing Muslim community came from the Quraysh tribe. This included important groups like the Rashidun, the Umayyads, and the Abbasids.

People have different ideas about where the name "Quraysh" came from. Some think it might mean "shark" in old Arabic. Others believe it means "coming together" or "association." Another idea is that the name comes from a leader named Qusayy ibn Kilab, who helped his family take control of the Kaaba.
