King Sejong the Great

King Sejong the Great was the fourth king of Joseon. He ruled from 1418 until he passed away in 1450. He is remembered as one of the best kings in Korean history.

Sejong is best known for creating Hangul, the writing system of the Korean language. This made it easier for everyone to read and write. Before Hangul, people used Chinese characters that were hard to understand.

Sejong was born in 1397 in Seoul. He became king when his father, King Taejong, stepped down. As king, Sejong started many new projects in science, medicine, and farming. His team, the Hall of Worthies, helped make new things like a Korean calendar and medical books.

Sejong is remembered as a great leader in Korean culture. Today, many places are named after him, like Sejong City. We celebrate Hangul each year on October 9 as Hangul Day.
