Welcome to Sri Lanka!

Sri Lanka is a beautiful island country in South Asia. It sits in the warm waters of the Indian Ocean, just southwest of the Bay of Bengal. This island is close friends with huge India, separated only by the Gulf of Mannar and the Palk Strait.

The capital city is Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte, but many people visit the busy and lively city of Colombo. Colombo is full of markets, tall buildings, and places to learn about Sri Lanka’s culture.

For thousands of years, Sri Lanka has been a special place for traders, explorers, and travelers. Long ago, sailors from faraway lands would stop here to trade spices and treasures. The island has had many names, like Ceylon, which people used when it was a British colony. Today, it is called Śrī Laṅkā in Sinhala and Ilaṅkai in Tamil.

Sri Lanka is full of amazing nature! The island has green forests, tall mountains like Pidurutalagala, and sparkling beaches. Rivers such as the Mahaweli River flow through the land, giving water to plants and animals.

People in Sri Lanka love their traditions. The Sinhalese and Tamil communities share a rich culture of music, dancing, and tasty food. Cricket is a very popular sport, and many children dream of playing for the national team one day.

Sri Lanka’s history is full of stories about ancient kings, wise teachers, and beautiful temples. One famous story from long ago is the Ramayana, an Indian tale that mentions a place called Lanka.

Today, Sri Lanka welcomes visitors from all over the world to enjoy its sunny beaches, tea plantations, and friendly people. The island is a place where old stories meet new adventures!
