The Statue of Zeus at Olympia

The Statue of Zeus at Olympia was a very big and special statue made a long time ago. It was made by a talented artist named Phidias around 435 BC. The statue sat in a beautiful place called the Temple of Zeus in Olympia, Greece.

Zeus is the king of the gods in stories from ancient Greek religion. He lives on Mount Olympus and rules the sky and thunder god. People thought he was very powerful and important.

The statue was one of the famous **Seven Wonders of the Ancient World](/w/8). It was very tall—about as big as a big school bus! The statue was made with shiny materials like ivory for the skin and gold for the clothes. Zeus sat on a fancy throne with many beautiful decorations.

Even though the statue is gone today, we still know about it from old stories and pictures on coins. People remember it as one of the most amazing things made by ancient artists.
