Balti language

Balti is a special language spoken by the Balti people. You can find it in places like the Baltistan region of Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan, the Nubra Valley in the Leh district, and the Kargil district of Ladakh, India. It is different from Standard Tibetan. Some sounds from Old Tibetan that disappeared in Standard Tibetan are still used in Balti.

Balti has a simpler way of using pitch or tone in words compared to Standard Tibetan. Because of influences from languages like Urdu, Punjabi, English, Arabic, and Persian, Balti is always adding new words to its vocabulary, just like many other languages in Pakistan.

Demographics and distribution

Balti is spoken in places like Baltistan in Pakistan and Kargil and Nubra in Ladakh, India. It is mainly used in areas such as Skardu, Shigar, Ghanche, Roundu, and Kharmang in Gilgit-Baltistan. In India, people speak Balti in Kargil city and nearby villages, as well as in places like Turtuk, Bogdang, and Tyakshi. Some people also speak Balti in cities such as Karachi, Lahore, and Islamabad in Pakistan, and in Dehradun and Nainital in India.

Classification and dialects

People in Leh who follow Buddhism sometimes call all Muslims in Ladakh "Balti." The Balti language has four main types or dialects. Even though these dialects have some differences in sounds and words, people can still understand each other. For example, the word for "to keep" is "yuq" in most places, but it is "juq" in the southern area of Kharmang and Kargil. Also, the word for "milk" is "oma" in some places like Chorbat-Nubra, Khaplu, and Kharmang-Kargil, but it is "ona" in Skardu, Shigar, and Rondu valley. The four dialects are:

1. Eastern dialect of Chorbat and Nubra valley
2. Central dialect of Khaplu valley
3. Western dialect of Skardu, Shigar and Rondu.
4. Southern dialect of Upper Kharmang and Kargil

Phonology

Consonants

The Balti language has different sounds for the same letter. For example, the sound /l/ can also be heard as [lʱ], [ɭ], or [ɫ̥]. The sound /ɖ/ can sometimes sound like a flap [ɽ]. The sound /s/ can also be heard as a retroflex [ʂ].

Vowels

Vowels in Balti can change their sound slightly. The vowel /ɑ/ can sound like an open back [ɑ], an open-mid back [ʌ], or an open central [ä]. The middle vowels /e/ and /o/ can sometimes sound as low as open-mid [ɛ, ɔ].

Orthographies

The Balti language is mostly written with the Perso-Arabic script. Some people also want to use the Tibetan script, which was used a long time ago. There have been ideas to use the Latin script and Devanagari too.

In 1985, a man named Yusuf Hussain Abadi added new letters to the Tibetan and Perso-Arabic scripts to better fit the Balti language. Since then, books and even a translation of the Qur'an have been written in Balti using the Perso-Arabic script.

Some Balti scholars recently want to use the Tibetan Balti, called "Yige," to help keep their culture alive. In 2006, they asked to add two new letters to Unicode to help write modern Balti words that come from Urdu.

Evolution

Since Pakistan took control of the area in 1948, words from Urdu have started appearing in the Balti language. Today, Balti does not have its own words for many new things, so people often use words from Urdu or English instead.

The Balti language has kept many special words that show respect, which are also found in Tibetan dialects and other languages.

Literature

Balti has many stories and poems passed down for generations, like the Epic of King Gesar. Most Balti writing is in verse, using styles from Persian poetry.

Balti is a Sino-Tibetan language. It is different from nearby languages like Pashto, Khowar, and Shina. Balti shares similarities mainly with Ladakhi.

Balti has faced challenges because it has been separated from Tibet and areas like Ladakh for many years. This separation, along with religious and political changes, has made it hard for Balti to grow. Stronger languages like Urdu also make it harder to teach and write in Balti. Some Balti scholars are trying to create a common way to write the language using Persian letters. Others are working to bring back the old Tibetan writing system with new letters for words from other languages, but these efforts are difficult.
