Artistic swimming at the Summer Olympics
Adapted from Wikipedia · Discoverer experience
Artistic swimming (known as synchronised swimming until 2017) has been an event at the Summer Olympics since the 1984 Games. It is a beautiful sport where swimmers perform graceful, coordinated routines in the water. The Olympic program today includes a Women's Duet event and a Mixed Team event.
In the Women's Duet, pairs of swimmers complete two routines, and medals are awarded based on their combined scores. In the Mixed Team event, teams of eight perform three different routines, with medals also given based on their total scores. Men were allowed to join this event starting from Paris 2024, but no men have competed yet.
The United States, Canada, and Japan were the top countries in artistic swimming for many years. However, from the 2000 Summer Olympics to the 2020 Summer Olympics, athletes from Russia won all the gold medals. After Russia faced sanctions from 2021, the People's Republic of China became the leading nation in the sport.
New rules were introduced in 2023, and the 2024 Olympic Games were the first to use these new rules, making the competition even more exciting.
