Canada at the Olympics

A fun baseball icon for learning about sports!

Canada has participated in every Winter Olympic Games and every Summer Olympic Games since it first joined in, except for the 1980 Summer Olympics, which it boycotted along with the United States and some other countries. Canada has always come home with at least one medal whenever it has taken part in the Olympics. The Canadian Olympic Committee is in charge of representing Canada in the Olympic Games.

One of the proudest moments for Canada came at the 2010 Winter Olympics. That year, Canada won more gold medals than any other country, a big achievement especially because the games were held in Vancouver, British Columbia, making Canada the host nation. It was a special time for Canadian athletes and fans alike.

Hosted Games

Canada has hosted the Winter Olympic Games twice. The first time was the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary, and the second time was the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver.

Further information: Canada at the Summer Olympics and Canada at the Winter Olympics

Canada has been winning medals at the Olympics since 1900, except when it boycotted the 1980 Summer Olympics. In summer games, Canada has won medals in many sports but has not won any in sports like aquatics (water polo), archery, or basketball (3-on-3).

In winter games, Canada has also collected many medals, leading in some sports. However, Canada has not won medals in Nordic combined or ski mountaineering. One special note is that Canada won an ice hockey gold medal at the 1920 Summer Olympics, which is counted in the winter sports medals.

Records

In Equestrian show jumping, Ian Millar competed at his tenth Summer Olympics, tying the record for the most Olympic games participated in. He missed the 1980 Summer Olympics due to Canada’s boycott but won his first medal, a silver, in 2008 in the team jumping event.

Clara Hughes is the only Olympian to win medals in both Summer and Winter Games. Penny Oleksiak and Andre De Grasse are the most decorated Canadian athletes in Summer Games, each with seven medals. Catriona Le May Doan was the first Canadian to defend her gold medal by winning again in 2002 after winning in 1998. Alexandre Bilodeau was the first freestyle skier to defend his Olympic title, winning gold in moguls in 2014. Trampoline gymnast Rosie MacLennan was the first Canadian to defend her gold medal in an individual Summer sport, winning in both 2012 and 2016. Swimmer Penny Oleksiak made history in 2016 by winning four medals at a single Summer Games, becoming Canada’s youngest multiple medalist at age 16. Ice dancers Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir were the first from North America to win Olympic gold in ice dancing, and they remain the most decorated figure skaters at the Winter Games.
